What is Custom Framing?

"I thought it would be cheaper than that! Oh, that is more than I thought it would be and the poster was only $20.00, how come the framing is $200.00".

-

We hear these comments regularly. So how do we determine the price for “Custom Picture Framing”?. The answer is right there, “Custom Picture Framing”. We Frame to your requirements.

-

We need to factor in such elements as: The time taken with the customer to design and format the finished product. The amount of labour time to construct or build the finished frame. The various elements within the frame, such as 1 Mount or 2, one opening or multi openings, weather the objects require a shadow box. What materials are to be used, standard mats or conservation materials. All these elements are factored in to the finished price. Hence the term “Custom Picture Framing”.

A few other points to keep in mind are: As a picture framer, we are also a design service, we ask  questions to find out what sort of décor, furniture, wall colour and what sort of “look” the customer is trying to obtain. We will try to maximise the look and feel of the print, poster, photo etc to obtain a look and feel that is in keeping with the print etc. as well as the personality of the customer. All these elements are part of the service provided by a Custom Picture Framer.

With any purchase, you would expect that a custom made item would cost more than an off the shelf product. The same would be said for tailor made clothes, so why shouldn’t custom framing cost a bit more?

-

Generally the price of custom framing is directly related to the quality of the materials and also the size and the difficulty of the job.

-

Sure, there are ready made frames on the market that you can by from various chain stores, but it is not very often that you can find a Frame and Mount to suit. The right size, correct colours of mat and frame.

-

Most of the time people will settle for “that will be alright”, but is that what you really require? In 6 months time will you say to yourself, “I really should have spent the extra money and had this framed professionally”?
